Open Source Proposal: RENT-A-HAL – A Citizen-First, Federated Multi-User Speech AI System
Published for public review on chatvisionimagine.com
N2NHU Lab for Applied AI · August 2026
Vision
We propose that the open-source RENT-A-HAL system become a university-sponsored, citizen-powered AI platform for India and the world. RENT-A-HAL turns ordinary Windows PCs equipped with NVIDIA RTX graphics cards into a private, multi-user, voice-first AI realm that supports chat, vision, and image generation — all running locally, with optional federation across many machines for reliability and scale.
Our goal is simple and ambitious:
Create a truly open, privacy-respecting, citizen-first AI infrastructure that any home, school, small office, or research lab can run and contribute to.
What RENT-A-HAL Already Is:
- Voice-activated multi-user speech interface (wake word “computer”)
- Local LLM inference (GPT4All / Llama-class models)
- Vision (Ollama + LLaVA)
- Image generation (Automatic1111 / Stable Diffusion)
- High-quality local TTS (Kokoro)
- Event-driven, API-first architecture
- Built-in federation with automatic peer discovery, health monitoring, failover, and load balancing
- Full source released under GPL-3.0 (commercial use requires a separate license)
- Live public demo at rentahal.com
- Detailed manuals, setup wizard, and binary installers already available
The system is designed from the ground up for home and SOHO use on a single Windows 11 machine with an RTX GPU (minimum ~6 GB VRAM), while remaining fully capable of forming larger federated clusters.
The Opportunity for India
India already possesses a large and growing installed base of NVIDIA RTX gaming cards in homes, cybercafés, colleges, and small businesses. Most of these cards sit idle the majority of the time. RENT-A-HAL’s federation layer can turn that idle capacity into a distributed, citizen-owned AI fabric — a national-scale mesh that is:
- Local-first and privacy-preserving by default
- Economically participatory (node operators can be rewarded)
- Resilient and hard to centralize or censor
- Complementary to government sovereign GPU initiatives
This is not theoretical. The technical foundations (federation protocol, conscription-style load balancing, health reporting, and economic layer) already exist in the current open-source release.
Proposal to IIT (BHU) Varanasi
N2NHU Lab has already granted the Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University) a perpetual license to the full source and binaries for educational and public-benefit use, including the right to reprint associated books.
We now formally invite IIT (BHU) to become the official sponsor university and long-term steward of the open-source RENT-A-HAL project.
Under this arrangement we propose:
- IIT (BHU) becomes the public institutional home and primary maintainer of the open-source codebase.
- The university may host the canonical GitHub organization/repository, set contribution guidelines, and guide the technical roadmap for the free/open edition.
- Students, faculty, and researchers gain first-class opportunities to contribute, run experiments on real federated workloads, and develop curriculum around local multimodal AI and distributed systems.
- N2NHU Lab extends an offer of collaboration with The University for commercial license opportunities, providing a potential revenue model for The University – to license and support commercial RENT-A-HAL systems for socially responsible endeavors that benefit the public – N2NHU Labs continues to support the project as an active contributor and originator.
- Together we work toward a national “Citizen GPU Mesh” pilot that invites ordinary owners of RTX hardware to join the federation under clear, transparent terms.
This model keeps the core system free and open for education and the public while preserving a sustainable path for commercial applications.
Benefits of University Sponsorship
- Long-term continuity and credibility for an ambitious open-source project
- Natural pipeline of student and faculty contributors
- Academic research opportunities in federated AI, speech interfaces, privacy-preserving inference, and economic incentives for edge compute
- Stronger positioning for Indian educational institutions, research labs, and public-interest deployments
- A distinctive national contribution: turning existing consumer hardware into public AI infrastructure
Call for Participation
We invite:
- IIT (BHU) faculty and administration to formalize sponsorship discussions
- Students and researchers to begin exploring the codebase and federation manuals
- Owners of RTX-equipped Windows machines who wish to test node operation
- Other Indian educational institutions, open-source communities, and civic technologists interested in citizen-first AI

We believe the combination of proven open-source software, a major Indian technical university, and the real installed base of citizen RTX hardware creates a rare opportunity to build AI infrastructure that is genuinely of, by, and for the people.
We welcome public comment, academic partnership, and collaborative development.
